Travel during pregnancy is never easy. A lot of precautionary measures have to be taken to ensure the comfort and safety of the expecting mother. Although travel should be minimized as far as possible during the pregnancy, it should not curb the freedom of pregnant women to travel, whether for leisure or for work purposes. Here are some tips that you can use in travelling.

  • Check with your doctor - You need to inform your doctor of your travel plans so that he or she can tell you if you are safe or unsafe for travel. High-risk pregnancies need extra care. Your doctor can also inform you if you have any upcoming tests which you need to work around if you plan on going on a trip.
  • Drink plenty of water and fresh fruit juice to prevent dehydration caused by the low humidity in the cabin. The fruit juice would keep up energy and provide the antioxidants needed to keep the immune system strong. Avoid caffeine and any drinks which contain caffeine, such as Coke, tea and coffee.
  • Pack some healthful snacks in the event that food is not available or is unappealing. A package of whole grain crackers, an energy bar or a low-fat cheese stick might make all the difference.
  • Bring along ear plugs and eye covers to catch up on a little rest during the trip. A favorite pillow or travel-sized blanket can help you find more comfortable positions during a long drive or flight. Jetlag, time zone changes and fatigue can make anyone's vacation less enjoyable. Take advantage of your downtime and rest.
  • Stroll along the aisle every hour or so, when it is permitted to do so. Make sure that the seat belt sign is off. This "getting up" exercise would help to relax and loosen stiff muscles and ease muscle tension and pain caused by stiff joints.

Flying can be stressful enough. Just because you have a baby on board does not mean you cannot have a safe and comfortable flight. Make the most of it before you have all the stress of traveling with a baby! When flying while pregnant is completely safe but it is best to fly during your second trimester. It is possible to fly during the first or third trimester but it is not recommended.
