On the 22nd of January, year 1954, Teide National Park in the Tenerife Island was declared the national park of Spain. This very same park is also the oldest attraction park of the country too. The whole area in the surrounds a volcano named Teidi which reaches up a height of 3,718 meters above sea level. This makes it the highest elevation of the Canary Islands and even on the whole country. Just from the volcano's base, it is considered the third largest volcano on the planet. The volcano has become very important to the island, the entire Gran Canaria and even to Spain. Right next to Teidi is another volcano named Pico Viejo, the second largest volcano of the island which measures up to 3,153 above sea level. The area of the national park is about 18,900 hectares and listed under the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 29th of June, year 2007. By the same year, it was given the title of one of the Twelve Treasures of the country of Spain. Halfway up to the mountain you will see telescopes inside the Observatorio del Teide, within the territory of the municipality of La Orotava.
In order to reach the park, choose one of the four access roads that leads to it. From the north, 33 km from the park, take the TF-21 road which is a part of the municipality of La Orotava which leads to Portillo de la Villa, Las Cañadas. East access, 43 kilometers from the park, take the TF-24 road of La Laguna to El Portillo de la Villa. South access take the TF-21 road from Villaflor to Boca de Tauce of Las Cañadas, distance from park is abotu 16 kilometers. Fourth access take TF-38 road from Chio to Boca de Tauce of Las Cañadas; distance from park is about 30 kilometers. There are public routes options should you take the bus. Take bus number 342 in Playa de las Americas and bus number 348 in Puerto de la Cruz.
This is the most visited park in the island, which gets about 2.8 million visitors annually. By 2004, it has reached 3.5 million visitors annually and the reason for this is because of the landscape. Right after that the council that oversees the maintenance and beauty of the park has made access trails that is approved by the European Ramblers Association, so as not to destroy the natural wonder of the volcano.
