When you are flying with kids in tow, there will always be that possibility of the flight turning into a nightmare. When your children start behaving inappropriately, you are bound to get stares from the other passengers and you might even notice them muttering to their companions, probably complaining about your unruly child. This can add more stress to the already stressful trip. So how can you lessen, if not completely avoid, your children from behaving this way?
Packing
When you pack things, make sure that you pack a little more than needed. Little children can already bring their own bags with their toys which will keep them entertained for the duration of the flight. If you have babies or toddlers, make sure that you pack more diapers than you think you might ever need. Bring along a change of clothes for you and your kids as well. All the necessary items should be packed in one bag so that you won't have to go through the other bags in the overhead compartment whenever you need something. Bring along plastic bags for soiled clothes or food that needs to be thrown away.
Boarding
Check ahead of time for the seating arrangement and the meals as well. If you have a child below two, make sure that you reserve the bassinet. If you are unable to do so, then you should consider asking for seats the rear end of the plane. You will have more room for your things there, the flight attendants can give you assistance especially if you are traveling alone, you will be bothering the other passengers less and you are closer to the bathroom in case you need to do diaper changes or your older children needs to use the bathroom.
Just before you board, also make sure that you let your children use up their energy. Let them walk around in the waiting lounge. They will have plenty of time to sit still during the flight. You might also want to get a leash for your child to keep him or her from getting lost in a busy airport. Your children should also be wearing shoes that are easy to put on and take off. If you have a baby with a stroller, make sure the stroller is already folded prior to boarding to avoid having to do that at the plane door and making the other passengers wait.
Food
You children, if you have more than one with you, should have identical food in sealed bags to prevent them from fighting over who gets what. Drinks should be small enough to be finished in one go. Bringing cups might be a good idea but would not be recommended as they could add up to your things to bring, unless you do not mind throwing them out. Do not bring food that can be crumbly, messy or sticky.
Toys
Make sure that each child has their own toy so that they won't fight. Instead of bringing a big box of crayons, bring small boxes that each of them can have. You can also bring along a book that you can read out loud to them.
