Top Six Must-See Destinations when in Africa

Its sprawling lush greens and untouched bodies of waters will always be the reasons why Africa continues to be a must-see for backpackers. However, considering its large land area, it is important to know which spots to prioritize especially for short trips. I now give my top six.

  • Cape Town Central, South Africa

This town is famous for its virgin beaches and ecological trails. This is perfect for those travelers who want to get a good view of the sunset while comfortably lounged in the white sands. For those who are into historical sites, you may also want to visit Robben Island, the famous prison cellar of Nelson Mandela.

  • The Devil’s Pool, Zambia

The name really sounds scary but you will think otherwise once you get to see this beauty with your own eyes. What made it be named like a devil’s lair is the fact that if you are crazy enough to stand under the one hundred meter drop of water, you will instantly see death. Of course, that is not much of a problem because you will be guided to the safe spots by amicable Zambian tour guides. You will be able to relax your weary soul in the cold waters resembling an infinity pool.

  • Ouidah, Benin

The Python Temple comes on top of the list of the must-visit destinations in Benin. You are reading it correctly. It is a python temple which means there are more than 40 snakes in one cellar. Scary, yes. However, these snakes are not the ordinary type. They are considered sacred and are believed to be vessels of fertility and life.

That is not the only mystical element in the area. There is also a magical tree found in the sacred forest. According to myths, a strong storm struck Benin and that large tree was cut into half blocking the pathway. After storm passed, villagers tried to locate the struck tree to clear the path however they were appalled to see that the tree magically returned to its prior stature like nothing happened. Mysterious and magical.

  • Marrakech, Morocco

This place seems to be a community of sturdy mosques, palaces and gardens. A visit in Marrakech is the ultimate throwback of the Moroccan history. Every nook and cranny is permeated with holy temples which you can only enter if you are a Muslim. However, a good view may already be seen from the outside.

  • Madagascar

Remember the animated film with the same title? If not, it is never too late to see. But if you want to have a first-hand information, take the first trip to Madagascar now. The country has numerous nature parks to choose from. There is the Isalo National Park, Avenue of Baobabs, Zahamena National Park and Ranomafana Park. Do not fret. They are equally breathtaking. You will be in awe with its rich biodiversity. This means it is perfect for mountain treks and off-terrain rides.

  • Plettenberg Bay, Africa

An amazing view of the sunset and sunrise, pristine waters and virgin shorelines—does that sound like a great deal to you. If not, then something is wrong with you. You get this treat on this side of the African shores. When you get to see this one, you will be at loss for words. Truly.

Africa has a lot to offer. It is sad to note however that the tourism industry in most places are underdeveloped. Good thing about it is that fact that most of the rainforests and bodies of water are not industrialized and were preserved to its original forms up to date. You might want to check them out while it is not that commercialized yet.
