Online reservation is effective but you as a traveler will need to provide further suggestions if you want something else in your hotel room.
Calling the hotel directly is a good option since you will be able to talk with the staff directly and make proper negotiations regarding the kind of accommodation that you want. You can specifically provide the things that you like and they will recommend you the kind of rooms they think fit your description.
Once you decide on a room, this is considered as booked under your name. If you have plans on canceling it, by all means cancel it ahead of time of if you are just late in arriving, inform the place that you will arrive at a later time.
