Most travelers have a vague idea of what the ratings systems are given to hotels. In every continent, they have their own style of rating the hotels but generally they are given an award of a maximum of 5 stars. Originally it was 3 stars that was introduced by the Michelin Guides for the restaurants in the year 1933.
- The highest is 3 stars - meaning that it is worth making a special trip to that particular restaurant. As of the year 2009, there were already 81 restaurants that were given the 3 star Michelin grade.
- Two stars means that it is worth a detour, either you are a local or you came for travel or vacation.
- One star is recommended only for the locals to visit.
The rating system has changed and for hotels a maximum of five stars is given. This is the often the criteria used by travelers to see if the hotel of their choice lives up to their expectation. Although five stars are given officially by a specific organization that is responsible for this, a lot of hotels have been self-proclaiming to be five star hotels when they are not. This really depends on which location is the hotel situated and the kind of grading system the country gives to their hotels.
When travelers talk about star ratings given to hotels, five stars make them imagine those luxurious hotels that are designed for royalties and will immediately think of the hotels found in Europe. The organizations that award the star rating to hotels in this continent are the Royal Automobile Club, Automobile Association and the VisitBritain. These three cooperate with each other when they rate a particular hotel. Below is how the star ratings differ.
- One star - acceptable and practical accommodation with limited range of facilities and services.
- Two stars - offers extra facilities and personal services. Bedrooms are more comfortable with en suite bathrooms and colored television.
- Three stars - very good accommodation that has spacious dwellings. Higher range of services and facilities.
- Four stars - excellent comfort and good quality accommodation. All the bedrooms have its own en suite bathrooms, overhead shower and a WC. Public areas have very spacious dwellings and the establishment itself has a strong focus on drinks and food.
- Five stars - luxurious accommodation, spacious dwelling and exceptional quality. Extensive services and facilities and cuisine is of the highest quality. Staff is composed of professionals and are highly attentive.
