A group of cyclists made a change to the normal route of travelling in Europe. The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) is coordinating the expansion of a network of high-quality cycling routes that connect the whole continent - EuroVelo is currently at their 14th route and envisions that the completion of their goal will be on 2020. The route network ties existing and planned routes to a European Network. The total of 70,000 km of trails is currently in the progress with 45,000 km already covered.
EuroVelo has set their goals to encourage more people to help them for the construction of the routes. The objectives of the ECF for the project is first, to ensure the accomplishment of superior quality European-grade cycle routes in the whole Europe, carrying the best European practice across borders in synchronized protocol, secondly to connect the existing routes to the most deserved humanity promoting their potentials and third, to send a message to the locals in the entire continent to give cycling a try. The main and most important objective of the group is to be advocates of healthy and sustainable travel even on a daily basis.
The vision started in 1995 under the original plan of creating 12 long-distance cycle routes. It is a shared coordination between ECF and De Frie Fugle (Denmark) and Sustrans (UK). After 12 years of promoting the advocacy, in 2007 ECF wholly took the responsibility. Despite financial hindrances, the founders have expanded to Finland, Cyprus, Spain and the UK. Over the years, there have been additions of routes. Recently, the project has 14 routes and soon enough, the tourism of Europe will be just a bike away – accessible and safe.
