The first recorded human settlement of the island was recorded to be dating 200BC. These group of human settlers were called the Guanches. The monarch or king of the island was given the title mencey and was given a land to rule as well called as menceyato. In the later years after they were conquered in the future, this is known as captainship, which was used as a reference by its conquerors. The son of mencey named Sunta of Tinerfe el Grande which governed the south islands starting from the town of Adeje. He had 9 children and at the time when he died, his 9 children were having disputes over who would be given the authorship of the lands. Since they could not come up with a good solution as to who should be given that right, they came into an agreement of dividing the island amongst them. Two achimenceyators were created on the land, independent of each other than divided the lands amongst the nine, with their own menceyes to govern it, becoming the municipalities present today.
In the month of December, 1493 the king of Spain has given rights to Alonso Fernandez authority in conquering the islands. By the following year in the month of April, Alonso landed successfully in the coast which became the capital of present day Tenerife, Santa Cruz. He tagged along about 2000 men while 200 where horseback riders. After preparing their fort at the coast, they started conquering the islands, capturing its native kings that were ruling the island then was presented in front of Ferdinand and Isabella in the country of Spain.
The Spanish conquest received different responses which has divided the natives into two groups of people, bado de paz and the bando de guerra, meaning peace and war, respectively. The ones who took the peace side are of Adeje, Anaga, Guimar and Abona while the Teguest, Tacoronte, Taoro, Icoden and Daute took the war side. Those who opposed strongly against the conquest fought the conquerors which made fully conquering of the island delayed for over two years. The military governor of the conquerors that time suffered immensely during battle against the Guanches. The island was won over entirely after a few months which has surrendered Castile in the 25th of December, 1494.
The rest of the natives were made into slaves by the conquerors, most of them from the war side while the rest died from diseases such as influenza and smallpox.
