Sri Lanka – A traveler’s guide to the exotic paradise

The beaches, surfing waves, white sand, exotic food, deep jungle, breath-taking rain forest, ruins and relics, and mountain peaks. All of these wrapped in to one country known as Sri Lanka.

The country is known for its rich culture and religions resulting from its worldwide colonizers that could not help themselves but be captivated by its beauty. It’s like all the culture around the world have been put together, like large pieces of jigsaw puzzles, to form a magnificent picturesque of what a culture should be. Knowing its history, you might be left wondering. Where should we start?

1. Museums and Temples

You can start your travels by visiting the old museums and temples to know more about the beautiful country.

You can visit the National Museum of Colombo. Known as the largest Museum in the country, it contains almost all of the treasures from thrones and crown of the Kandyan Monarche to the paintings and sculptures. You can definitely get the view of its vast history.

After a visit to the museums, you might want to visit the Gangaramaya Temple as well. A mixture from old to a modern design, this temple shows how the people embrace innovation to their lives and how open they are to new ideas.

2. Food trips at one of the spectacular Beaches

Since Sri Lanka is surrounded by a vast ocean, you should never miss to visit their astonishing beaches and enjoy having a sun-kissed-skin while surfing, diving, or snorkeling around the colorful coral sanctuary.

Check out Mt. Lavinia and enjoy the peaceful suburbs while eating their exotic delicacies like KothuRotti and great seafood. You can stop by its beach that is named after a gypsy woman who had an affair with one of Sri Lankan governors. Intriguing right?

One of thewell-known tourist spot since 1960’s is found in the south of Colombo on the beach ofHikkaduwa.Different types of colorful fishes and astonishing vibrant reef with its one of kind formations are mostly visited by tourists and marine lovers there.

For those who could not get enough of the water, there are diving spots with ship wrecks that you can enjoy sightseeing together with the fishes.

Diving shops that offers PADI courses as well as equipment are also available for enthusiasts or for those who would just like to try the luxury of diving.

Surfing is also one of its attractions. With good waves, you can definitely enjoy board surfing as well as body surfing.
To get there, it will take you approximately 1hr and 17 minutes from Colombo via Southern Expy/E01.

3. Luscious green mountain trails

If you enjoy strolling down the mountain trails, it is a must for you to try trekking in the tea trails of NuwaraEliya. Ruins during the colonial era, marvelous waterfalls, vast tea plantations, rose gardens, and breath taking sceneries are what you can look forward to.

NuwaraEliya, famous for its English touch is also known as The Little England. It was founded by Sir Samuel Baker. It served as a safe haven by the British civil servants after a long day of work under the sun. While having a traveled through time experience with the old heritage, from there, you can also see the Pidurutalagala known as the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka.

From Colombo to the trail of NuwaraEliya, it will take you 3hr and 30 minutes to the starting point at Kandy Station.

4. Awe-inspiring train ride

If long walks are not your taste, and would like to just sit back and enjoy sight-seeing at the same time, you can try to take the train from Colombo to the city of Badulla via Kandy Station. Vast mountain hills, the wide waterfall, and the tea plantation can be viewed. Just don’t forget to be right on time and you can enjoy the ride of the lifetime straight from your window sit.
