Jerusalem is perhaps the most significant, and almost certainly the best-known religious city in the world. It is a city with three major world religions; Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Missionaries, religious organizations, layman and other people flocked in this place for their spiritual activities. It never fails to amaze them the extraordinary religious sites in Jerusalem.
- Temple Mount – it is located to the east of the Old City of Jerusalem and known to the Muslims as the “Noble Sanctuary”. It is both sacred for Judaism and Islam. It is the most famous and contested piece of religious site in the world. It is the location of the Jewish Temples before and the Islam's holiest mosques nowadays. The Temple Mount is the flash point of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and because of it access to the temple is heavily restricted. And every visitor should pass a tight security.
- The Church of Holy Sepulchre – it is the holiest place for Catholic and Christians Orthodox. It is identified as the place for both of the crucifixion and the burial of Jesus of Nazareth. The Church of Holy Sepulchre is considered as the pilgrimage center for Christians all over the world.
- The Via Dolorosa – it is the road where Jesus walked from the place of Pontius Pilate to Golgotha, the location of the crucifixion. It is also the most sacred Christian byway in the world. It is also known as the “way of sorrows” which symbolically relive the moments of Christ's passion. Today’s Via Dolorosa originates in pious tradition rather than on certain fact, but it is hallowed by the footsteps of the faithful over centuries.
- The Western Wall – it is also known as the “Wailing Wall”. It is one of Judaism's most holy sites and part of the western flank of the holy site of the Temple Mount. The wall is the imposing remnant of Jerusalem's Second Temple, which the Romans destroyed in 70 CE. It stands as an impressive archaeological record from the time of King Herod. The Western Wall is a holy site and visitors are expected to do a kippa, a small Jewish skull cap, before approaching the wall. Also, there is a separate area of the wall for female visitors.
These are just a few of many religious sites in the city of Jerusalem. A trip to Jerusalem's religious site would never be complete without passing on these places.
