Most of the expats that apply for an Iranian visa have been granted one within two to three weeks, but there are also reports that say it can get longer than that. The hassle may be there, but majority of those that went through it did not regret what they did.   • Transit Visa

This type of visa is issued for 5 to 7 days. You will need to enter and exit through different countries, while holding onto a ticket or visa going forwards to a country. You can get this visa in 1 or 2 days and an authorization number is no longer required. This type is not available for passport holders of the US.

  • Tourist Visa on Arrival

This type is issued for fifteen days on the day of arrival from any international airport. This is the most convenient amongst the three types, but has a very high risk that those that hold this type might be denied entry into the country.

  • Tourist Visa

This is the most common and highly recommended type of visa which is issued for up to thirty days, and can be extended, too. This type of visa is a must to be obtained before going to Iran, and is valid only for 90 days upon date of issue.

Citizens from the US are free to enter, but they will need to make pre-arrangements for a private or tour guide. Another option can be sponsored by a relative or a friend living in Iran who will take full responsibility of you. Anyone who hold passport from Israel or those that got a stamp from the country itself are not able to get an Iranian visa.
