Lake Tahoe is actually the second deepest lake in the USA. It also has one of the highest elevations, at 6,255 feet high. Covering the shoreline’s 72 scenic miles is quite a task, but certainly worthwhile. The north shore tends to be quiet, the west shore rugged, and the east shore undeveloped. Your trip here will never be completed if you will not take a day or two to discover what it has to offer.
Here are some must-see places at Lake Tahoe:
For example, there’s South Lake Tahoe. This area is arguably an overdeveloped part of Lake Tahoe, and is surrounded by lovely alpine mountains. It is at the base of the Heavenly mountain resort, which is world-class. You can visit this region for a variety of activities, such as lodging, beachcombing, and skiing.
For example, Donner Lake is 3 miles long, and a busy recreational center for the region. It is named for the Donner Party, which camped here during the fateful 1846 winter. You can find Donner Summit located west, which has six downhill and cross-country resorts. Surrounded by the Tahoe National Forest and mountains, Truckee is an alive town that is full of Old West history. The railroad made it famous.
For instance, the Donner Memorial State Park is where the Donner Party was trapped during the winter of 1846-47. The park is lovely, and contains features such as a sandy beach, hiking trails, and wintertime activities such as skiing and snowboarding. The entrance fees include a free admission to the top-notch Emigrant Trail Museum. The museum includes fascinating historical exhibits and a 25-minute film that reenacts the fate of the Donner Party’s story.
The Kings Beach State Recreational Area is a lakeshore community that has some of the region’s best restaurants. The summers are quite active here.
