A Staycation Is a Vacation Minus the Lodging

The word “staycation” itself is quite a fascinating one. It combines “stay” and “vacation,” which seems to be a contradiction. But in fact, it isn’t. A staycation is a vacation type that allows you to stay home or close to home, rather than traveling to a faraway destination. For example, you could take a day trip near your home, and then return home in the evening—instead of staying in lodging because it’s not practical or possible to return home while you’re on vacation. People take vacations for a variety of reasons. One of the most common ones is that it’s more financially practical for them, then traveling to a faraway place. Others are unable to go on a traditional vacation due to medical conditions. Yet another reason to take a staycation is because you have personal business to attend to in your hometown.

There are several options when you take a staycation. For example, you can go swimming in your own front yard or backyard. If the weather is pleasant you can spend time relaxing near the pool.  Another option is to watch some movies at your home. Due to our busy schedule sometimes we’re unable to enjoy such simple pleasures. Don’t forget the snacks! Another staycation activity you can enjoy at home is playing games. They can be either indoor or outdoor games. If the weather is good you can go outdoors to play the games. Another at-home staycation idea is to invite friends over. While they’re there you can enjoy various fun activities, such as games. Finally, you could cook a meal for friends or family.

There are also several activities that you can enjoy in your area. Most areas have public parks that you can avail of. Several types of parks are available. Some parks are designed for playing sports and games. Other parks are ideal for hiking, and contain picnic areas. Still other perks that you can find at perks include historic sites, fishing, horse trails, and beaches. Beaches are another great location for a staycation. If it isn’t like a tropical paradise, it can still be enjoyable. Plays are another great option for staycations, allowing you to enjoy some local theater.

As a word of caution, there are various activities that you should avoid when enjoying a staycation. Examples include cleaning, housework, yardwork, and house remodeling. The reason is that activities aren’t recreational, so you’ll be working rather than “playing.” Also, shopping isn’t a good idea because the purpose is to spend money. And one of the main objectives of a staycation is to reduce the cost of your vacation. Eating at a restaurant usually isn’t a wise idea for a staycation, for the same reason.  Surfing the Internet is another activity you should enjoy since it’s something you likely do often.

A staycation is definitely one of the best options for you, if you’re on a shoestring budget and still want to take a vacation. Just make sure that you choose the “right” type of staycation, and avoid others that won’t really be a vacation.
